Terms of Service
Last updated: September 2026
1. What this is
Pick Your Posek (“we”, “the service”) is an entertainment and educational tool. You type a question and we look for a published Jewish legal opinion (a “psak” or responsum) that answers it permissively, and show you who wrote it and where.
2. Not rabbinic guidance
Nothing on this site is actual rabbinic guidance, a ruling for your situation, or religious, legal, medical or financial advice. We search sources automatically and pick the most permissive match we can find, on purpose. That is the joke and the point. For a real psak, consult your own rabbi.
3. How answers are made, and their limits
- We search the classic texts and codes first, then widen the search to published responsa. Each answer shows a confidence score based on where in that order the source was found. The score is not a judgment of anyone’s authority.
- Quotes are checked word for word against the source text before we show them. Author names come from the source’s own records, not from AI.
- Sources can be misread, taken out of context, or superseded. A matching quote does not mean the author would approve of how it is applied to your question.
- Stand-in names. If no published source is found, we show a stand-in name with an invented surname instead of a real rabbi. These answers show an invented explanation attributed only to that rabbi (no other texts cited), have no published quote, show “Source: None found”, and a confidence of “<10%”. The name is made up and does not refer to a real person.
4. Plans and limits
- Free: 3 questions a day.
- Premium ($5.00/month): 20 questions a day and 2 certificates each billing month. Premium is not unlimited; the daily limit applies.
- Days reset at midnight in the America/New_York time zone. Unused questions and unused monthly certificates do not roll over.
- We may apply additional rate limits to prevent abuse.
5. Certificates
A certificate is a novelty PDF ($3.60 each, or included with Premium) that shows your name, your question, the ruling, the posek and a citation reference to the source. It does not reproduce source text; the full quote, link and credit are on the answer page. It is not issued, signed or endorsed by any rabbi or rabbinical court. The signature line is decorative. The QR code links to a public verification page that shows what the certificate contains.
Certificates with a stand-in name (for answers where no published source was found) are novelty items. They show “Source: None found” and a confidence of “<10%”. They do not reflect any real rabbi’s ruling, and before you pay we show the notice “This ruling is attributed only to this rabbi; no other published texts are cited. Novelty certificate.”
6. Subscriptions, cancellation and refunds
- Premium renews monthly until you cancel. You can cancel anytime from your account page. You keep Premium until the end of the period you already paid for.
- Payments are processed by Stripe. We do not store your card details.
- Certificates are digital goods delivered immediately. If something went wrong with one, contact us and we will make it right.
- These are purchases, not donations, and are not tax-deductible.
7. Acceptable use
Don’t use the service to harass anyone, to present a certificate as a real ruling, to scrape or overload it, or to get around the limits.
8. Third-party sources
We only quote texts whose license allows commercial use (Public Domain, CC0, CC BY, CC BY-SA), from Sefaria and its contributors, the Dicta Library (CC BY-SA 4.0) and Hebrew Wikisource (CC BY-SA 4.0). Each quote on an answer page carries the credit its license requires and links to the original. Quoted CC BY-SA text remains under CC BY-SA 4.0 (or the version stated in its credit). See Credits and licenses.
9. Disclaimer and liability
The service is provided “as is”, without warranties. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for decisions you make based on it.
10. Changes and contact
We may update these terms and will change the date above when we do. Questions: contact@pickyourposek.com (placeholder).
